Superbowl…shuffling!

First of all, glad it wasn’t the Chiefs! The Eagles Defensive Line show up with “how to stop the Chiefs offense 101″…get in #15’s face, show him the turf.  D-line = Superbowl MVP!
Next, the commercials. My number one was the WeatherTec ad…Granny flashes her tata’s? C’mon man that’s funny! Honorable mentions to flying eyebrows in Little Ceasars ad (Pringles had a flying mustache…WTH?), Jeep and Uber Eats.
Now let’s talk about the halftime “entertainment”. The fact that Kendrick Lamar was the halftime performer tells me he’s a big star. His song “Not Like Us” earned FIVE Grammy Awards including  Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, apparently it’s the most decorated song in Grammy history. I get it! Hip Hop? Rap? It’s big (duh). But I don’t like it and I think MOST (not all) most viewers, agree with me.
I caught some crap from my son for expressing that opinion to him. He reminded me that I’m old and very Caucasian. I caught the same grief when I said I didn’t like Taylor Swift either. Didn’t like seeing her in her luxury suite when I tuned in to watch big, hairy, sweaty dudes smash into each other for three hours.  Of course a few folks proceeded to explain her significance to me, how inspiring she was to young women, what a savvy businessperson she is blah blah blah. Hell I knew that! I played her stuff on my radio show(🙄) still… I don’t like it.
I’m 63. The average age of a superbowl viewer is around 57 years old. Sure  and you betcha, they want to attract a younger audience. But do sponsors/advertisers really want to chase off as many folks as they likely did with that performance? I don’t think so. I think the producers are so afraid to look old n “lame” they are erring on the side of try to be young n “hip” (the youngins say it “smacks” but I dunno).
There’s got to be a happy medium in there somewhere! A band group or artist that crosses over? Chili Peppers, Bruno Mars, Pearl Jam, Nelly, Backstreet Boys, Kelly Clarkson, etc who appeal to the middle. Not all of them my cup of tea but demographically in the middle. Heck a country band hasn’t played the Superbowl since 1994! God forbid Laney Wilson, Darius Rucker, Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood and Dolly get up there!  I want the Broncos or Bills in next year’s game and click here to see who I recommend for next year’s halftime show 😉
