25 years. While watching the coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attack today. I mentioned to Deb “I wonder what JoJo and Alex remember of that day”, our 11 and 8 year old boys.
Deb was a stay at home Mom. I was on my way to work when I heard about the first plane hitting the WTC on KOA Radio where I worked. I called Deb and told her to turn on the TV. I was in traffic listening to Colorado’s Morning News. At that point the media thought it was an accident.
I got to work where there was a group of 10-15 folks in front of a bank of TV’s in the lobby. As we were watching the flames and smoke coming from that gaping hole in the tower the second plane appeared and flew into the other tower with an explosion that made all of us gasp, some screams. I said out loud “we are at war”. It was surreal then, seems unreal today.
To this day I have a hard time watching the videos of those moments. I left work, drove to our Church. Deb met me there. 30-40 people were already there. We heard about the plane hitting the Pentagon then the plane crashing in Pennsylvania. Rumors were flying that hijacked planes were headed to the White House, the Capital, etc. We didn’t know what else to do but Pray together.
We then drove to the school and picked up our boys. I know we tried to explain what was happening without scaring them. I don’t remember what we said. Now generations are here that don’t remember that day. Adults now who weren’t yet born or just a young child. I’m curious about their perspective, their understanding of that day, what they were or are being taught about 9/11. I know (and love) many who were motivated by that day to serve and defend this country.
I’m now a 65 year old Grandpa. 9/11/2001 will always be painful when I remember. It’s almost impossible to explain to the young how different things were before that day and how much that day changed the world forever. Never forget
